What an unusual evening it was for us all. Delightfully presented by the eloquent Sarah Middleton, it was a most interesting evening, full of fascinating and stimulating information. Sarah is a local preacher in the Cardiff Methodist Circuit and an experienced art educator, and the members were given a wonderful insight into the Methodist Modern Art Collection. It was a 1960s initiative by Dr John Morel Gibbs and Rev Douglas Wollen of Penarth and contains more than 50 artworks, including names such as Maggi Hambling, Graham Sutherland, Ceri Richards, David Jones, as well as works by Indian and Japanese artists. A thought provoking collection of lino prints, metal carvings, oil paintings, mixed media artworks, all designed by artists trying to paint “the spiritual”, it was a slide show of modern Christian art. Sarah discussed, and invited discussion, on many beautiful and sometimes harrowing images from around the world. It was a privilege to hear the stories behind the art work . Today’s world, “regardless of faith or commitment”, will certainly benefit from seeing this collection. Thank you Sarah.
