Derrick Turner Competition 2020 - Week 1

‘By The Seaside’

Critique & selection by Darlas Hunter

11 Feb 2020

Firstly the Society thanks Darlas for travelling from her home in Wiltshire to Wales on a wet and windy night, to judge the first category, Beside the Sea. Over 40 paintings were submitted for an appraisal by Darlas, a great and experienced artist.

She shared her art philosophy and approach to painting so generously, and we all benefited from her knowledge and understanding. Darlas was highly complimentary of the standard of work, and sensitively appraised each piece. Eventually Darlas had to choose 10 and explained how each of these resonated in different ways with her.

These 10 pieces will be whittled down to 2, the winner and runner up for Part 1 of this year’s  Derrick Turner Competition, at the next meeting, when ‘Made in Wales’ is the subject for Part 2 of the Competition, and the overall winner and runner-up will be decided. Congrats to the 10 chosen artists.

A gallery of some of the paintings shown in Part 1 is here.
